Finding The True North: How Continuing Education Creates Pathways from Learning to Opportunity

Higher education is navigating unprecedented change, as learners move between education, work, and reskilling throughout their lives. This session explores how continuing and extension education can serve as the “true north” for this fragmented landscape by reconnecting learning to progression. We examine how mobility, stackable credentials, Comprehensive Learner Records (CLR), and learner portfolios can shift institutions from transactional course delivery to learner-centered either matriculated or non-matriculated pathways. Drawing on case examples from UChicago Professional, University of California Merced, Riverside, and Jones College’s Online Workforce College, participants will gain insights into designing credential ecosystems that support lifelong learning and workforce relevance.

Built on 1EdTech standards, this session shares how a flexible, learner-centered model was implemented in practice, including key decisions, challenges, and lessons learned. Attendees will leave with actionable insights to build scalable, interoperable systems that expand access and deliver real impact.
