In our educational vision, ‘Assessment as learning’ is an important building block. Conditional to this is a user-friendly digital student-controlled development and assessment portfolio in Canvas. This wish has led to a portfolio plug-in, which Fontys developed together with Drieam. The integration of the LMS and portfolio in one system has enriched the learning environment for students. It has also led to greater student ownership of their studies.
In a template, the student places a variety of professional products (e.g., videos, podcasts, reports, animations, group work, results achieved, assignments in Canvas) with their set goals in the collections. In doing so, the student formulates criteria, learning activities, timeline and feedback moments in advance in consultation with the instructor. This template is more structured for beginning students than for senior students who have been working with the portfolio for some time. Feedback plays a major role in the learning process, providing the student with information, redirection and increasing the likelihood that the student will achieve his or her goals. Feedback is placed in the portfolio and comes from peers, field supervisors, student coaches and expert teachers. These can be both internal and external users. Especially the possibility to give audio feedback appears to work well and to stimulate the student to take active action.
Formative interim feedback thus receives stronger attention than before. It gives the student more insight into their development and the required level they must eventually achieve. To demonstrate this, they select professional products, which they justify in their assessment portfolio that is assessed using SpeedGrader in Canvas. In short: the learning process is central and the emphasis is less on the final product. Which is ultimately of higher quality.
We are now working with the third version of the developed portfolio plug-in. And it gets better and better. Among other things, I am looking forward to the realization of the dashboard in version 4 that increases the ownership even further using learning analytics.

At Fontys University of Applied Sciences ICT, the student is the owner of their own learning process. This means that the student can also determine which deliverables they produce to demonstrate their learning outcomes. We were looking for a portfolio tool that could facilitate this. We found this in Portflow.
The design possibilities of Portflow challenge the student to shape the content and construction of the portfolio himself. The integration with the LMS system Canvas makes it possible to record the student’s progress in an accessible way, while Portflow also facilitates the owner of the portfolio to ask for targeted feedback on deliverables or the entire portfolio. For us, Portflow is a good addition to actually implement our didactic principles in practice.

We employ Portflow as a catalyst for our initiated educational transition towards learning outcome-oriented practice, making the connections between learning activities and contexts to the learning outcomes. Students use Portflow to visualize their learning process and demonstrate learning outcomes while being at the wheel of their education.
