An e-portfolio supports higher education institutions in achieving an important goal from their educational vision: allowing the student to increasingly own their own learning process. An e-portfolio offers students the freedom to, among other things, formulate their own goals and decide how the portfolio is structured, who gets access, and which artefacts are selected for an assessment.

An e-portfolio fits within the aspirations of many higher education institutions for freedom of choice and flexible learning pathways for their students. A portfolio can be used independently of the learning pathway: the intended learning outcomes are fixed, but the student themselves can choose how they achieve the objectives, enabling flexibility and customisation.

Give Students Control Over Their Own Learning Journey with Portfolio-based Education

In line with their new education and assessment policy established in 2022, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) strives to give students more control over their own learning process. This requires a tool that gives students ownership and supports them in their development. The AUAS chose Portflow because it best met their desire for a uniform yet flexible solution that is fully integrated with their current VLE Brightspace, helps implement the modern educational vision, and is prepared for future developments in education.

In collaboration with Drieam, Portflow was successfully implemented across the entire institution. Now, Portflow in combination with the VLE plays an important role in stimulating student ownership and engagement in their own learning journey.

Robust framework for (sub)goals

Portflow facilitates a robust framework of goals and sub-goals to which students can relate evidence and feedback as an independent dimension on their learning journey. These (sub)goals make the longitudinal and holistic development of the learner visible, both within learning contexts and independently of the learning pathway.

Scaffolding along the route

The scaffolding toolbox in Portflow is flexible, suiting the needs of the student and the context in which learning takes place. It enables educators to provide the right support at the right time, including through templates and rich 360-degree feedback. These are valuable guardrails that can be gradually removed over time.

Visualisation of the learning process

Portflow makes student development visible. Formulating clear goals, collecting experiences and evidence, and receiving rich feedback are essential in this regard. This data forms the basis for insightful graphs and diagrams, which guide the student on their own learning journey. Portflow analyses both quantitative and qualitative feedback and summarises it.

Learning Trips & Activities

With Learning Trips, students can organise their past and future learning experiences in the form of a timeline. This trip then tells their story in chronological order. By planning Activities, the student can indicate which next steps they will take. Activities can also be scaffolded in a template and even linked to Goals, to indicate which goal that learning activity should contribute to.

Access for Externals

Students can identify and invite stakeholders themselves for (part of) their development portfolio. In addition to people with a formal role, such as placement supervisors, this can also include people with expertise or experience in the area in which the student wishes to develop.

Access for alumni

One of the advantages of our portfolio software is that it allows students to continue updating and accessing their portfolio even after completing their studies. With ‘Alumnus Login’, students can continue to view and share valuable learning experiences, also after graduation.
